Term Project
Surviving an emergency at home

All of us this month have heard about the Cristchurch earthquakes. We might live in Auckland and think "That will never happen to me." But it might, and there might be other things we should be prepared for just in case.

Are you prepared? Is your family prepared?

The best time to make sure you and your family are prepared to help yourselves survive an emergency is right now.
So lets look at what you can do.

Firstly, click here to visit the Civil Defense website for kids and schools.

Secondly, after looking at what information the 'What's the Plan Stan' website has, answer these questions.
1. Do you have an escape plan at home?
2. Do you have an emergency survival kit at home?

If you answered yes then, CONGRATULATIONS and WELL DONE. Now see if there is anything else you might need like Emergency Contact Phone Numbers. Make sure they're somewhere everyone can see them like on the fridge.
Or maybe if you have people with disabilities or elderly people living next door you can find out what your family could do to help them in an emergency.

If you answered no then that's where we can start to help you and your family be prepared.

Draw your escape plan

Step 1. Click here for a picture you can print out and colour in to make your own escape plan.

Step 2. After you've printed it get an adult to help you draw the plan of your house. You can then add some colour and draw some things in the house, like tables, chairs and beds.

Step 3. Then using a bright colour that is easy to follow draw the path you would follow to escape from your house in an emergency.

Remember to add where your family is going to meet up once you are all outside.
